The Isle (2000)
Ki-duk Kim has made the South-Korean movies famous to the rest of the world. Cleaning up the prize tables on various festivals year after year has made him a very influental director. And it's certainly well deserved. This is one of his earlier works and one of the movies that helped to make him an international phenomenon. The story is about a mute woman who runs a fishing resort, renting out these floating huts, selling coffee, baits and her body to the fishers. A man in the run from the police rents a shack and tries to kill himself in it. The woman saves him and she falls in love with the man. It's definitely not your usual love story, being quite insane at moments and mostly focusing on carnal pleasures. The movie goes from beautiful to repulsive and back quite a many times, but it's all of the time certainly interesting. The movie looks quite stunning, some of the scenes being like paintings. The acting is top notch as always in Ki-duk's movies. All in all this is a good little drama that suffers a bit from losing the point at times.
