Toystore gone berzerk

Yatterman (2009)

What do you get when you combine a classic children's anime series with the twisted mind of Takashi Miike? You get a visual frenzy with more sexual refenreces than your average sexploitation flick. The story is about two toy store keepers who fight for justice with their robot dog against the evil group of Doronbo with similar robots and gadgets. Both are looking for the pieces of a mystical skull which could possibly bring an end to the world. The story is painfully formulatic, the groups fight, destroy eachother's robots only to fall back to build a bigger robot for the next fight. It surely suffers from that, but actually that didn't bother me too much as this movie is tons of fun, either it's genuinely funny moments or moments that are so over the top cheesy that they are simply hilarious. Also the movie looks great, kind of like a toystore gone berzerk. The main problem is the length of the movie, as it's quite repetative it tends to get a bit boring at times. I also was a bit puzzled wether this was a children's movie or an adult fantasy. It has tons of sexual references and for example I can just imagine all the kids asking their parents what was the dog doing to the female robot. They might have some explaining to do, or then it's just my dirty mind. Anyway it was fun and weird enough to watch but as a bit shorter version it would have been a whole lot better.
