Catching up - part 2

This is the second half of my attempt to catch up the quiet weeks.

Dirty Pretty Things (2002)

Good story that would have had much more than this movie shows. The cast was brilliant and the movie looked really good. The story was entertaining, touching and thought provoking, but it felt a bit too superficial to make this a great movie. A bit deeper look into the subject would have made this one a brilliant movie, but it's still in no means a bad movie as it is. Definitely worth watching.

The Life Before Her Eyes (2007)

Well the first half of this one was quite promising and really nailed me to the seat, but unfortunately towards the end it started to fall apart. And the final twist was just something colossal in stupidity, missing all the good points the story had. Uma Thurman was good as always, but the rest of the cast didn't really impress in any way.

Bangkok Dangerous (2008)

Nicholas Cage running around Bangkok killing people and training a young man to become his apprentice. Some individual scenes worked quite good and it had enough action to keep me awake, but still it was a rather dull movie.

Mr. Brooks (2007)

Kevin Costner as a serial killer, yeh right. Well the movie wasn't as bad as I expected, but still I just couldn't keep myself from laughing at some of the "twists" it had. With a better cast and leaving some of the "twists" out, this would have been a good movie, now it wasn't.

What Dreams May Come (1998)

I though I'll give this one another try as when it came out I thought it wasn't a good movie. Well, the huge plot holes I saw back then were even more notable now, the story still didn't work on any deeper level then that superficial cliched way it did before. What I also noticed was that it's not exactly well acted, I mean might be that the actors had hard time with the overly cheesy dialog or something, but it felt somehow phony. Weird thing as I consider the cast quite talented. It's not a totally crappy movie, it still looked stunning and it has that good hearted tone in it which I liked. But I have to say it's still not a good movie.

Step Brothers (2008)

Well another comedy with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. Had some laughs and was entertained, but can't call this one a good movie.

WALL-E (2008)

A funny and entertaining movie that left me with a good mood. Thou after the brilliant start half the movie looses a bit of it's grip, but luckily there's still plenty of outrageously funny scenes to keep the spirit up.

Sauna (2008)

I really wanted this to be good. A Finnish horror movie is such a rarity that I was really excited to go and see this one. Well unfortunately I was quite disapointed. Apart from a few cheap scares the horror was completely missing. The story wasn't that original either. Luckily it looked great and the cast was quite good. Nice effort, but I just can't believe this is the best they could take from this genre. Thou I really hope this movie does well in the box office so we might see another Finnish horror movie some time, but sadly I have a feeling it won't happen.

You, the Living (2007)

Don't know what it is with Roy Andersson and his movies, they just work like magic to me. Seems that everything the guy makes is pure brilliance. This was no exception. Brilliantly funny, weird, lovable, twisted, touching, outrageous piece of movie art. I would dare to call this an instant classic.
