Jihad is a laughing matter

Four Lions (2010)

This movie took me by surprise when I saw it earlier this year. I knew the subject was very touchy and the movie seemed like a goofball comedy making fun of islam. So I went to see it with mixed feelings, mostly is it ok to laugh at these muslim terrorists or is it a bit too early to make fun of the still hot subject. Well no, it wasn't too early and sure as hell it was ok to laugh at them. The movie focuses on the jihadish suicide bombers making fun of them, not the religion itself. And it's outrageously hilarious, ranging from the goofy slapstick cheap laughs to very smart dark comedy. Haven't laughed as hard in ages while watching a movie. After seeing it I was actually thinking it was about a time someone did a movie like this. Sure the crazy jihadish suicide bombers have been made fun of in movies before but I've never seen a movie focus solely on them with this much content. It's kind of like what Chaplin did to Hitler in The Great Dictator (1940). Something so insane deserves to be laughed at and made ridiculous. Sure I can understand that people who has lost family and friends to terrorist attacks might not find it that funny, but I tend to believe comedy is the best cure for most of the things wrong in this world. Quite a brilliant movie and the best comedy I've seen this year.
