The Road (2009)
The very first movie I saw this year and oh man did it raise the bar high for the year. I love the book by Cormac McCarthy and having read it couple of times I was a bit worried how this movie would cope with it. Luckily it's not a "Hollywooded" version of it and follows the original quite literally. The cast is quite brilliant, Viggo Mortensen is amazing and Kodi Smit-McPhee does a solid job as well. Even the smaller support parts are being played magnificently by a great cast like Robert Duvall, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Michael K. Williams. They not only play the part, they also look the part quite strikingly like I had imagined from the book. The story does skip some bits as always in the movies, otherwise the length would become an issue, but the parts skipped are not that essential. And as the movie is not a book you can put down when it becomes too much for you, some of the parts were definitely better to be left out. The movie captures the feeling of the book very well. And it's surely not a good feeling. This is a grim, hopeless and desperate tale about a father and son in a post apocalyptic world seeking for even a glimpse of hope. It's by far the best disaster movie ever made, but then again it's not about the disaster, it's about the love between a father and son in a world without hope. So it's not a feel good movie, but yet it's deeply touching and even beautiful in it's own way. I don't even remember what was the last movie that moved me to tears, must have been years ago, but a big man like me was sobbing like a little kid during this, so that alone deserves a special mention. The biggest question this thought provoking story raises is how far would you travel on the road and finding the answer to that will surely bring out emotions. Now as the year is nearing it's end I can safely say this was the best movie of 2010 and among the best movies ever made.
