Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010)
Haven't read the book so can't say anything about that, actually hadn't even heard about it before this movie, but right from the start I have to say this would most likely work better as a book or TV series. So this is a movie about a group of young people heading off to the wilderness for the weekend and when they come back they see their city ran over by an Asian army and the country seems to be at war. Their parents are held hostage at the local amusement park and the nearby port is used to resupply the enemy troops in the country. So the kids decide to fight back. Sounds familiar? Well at start I was sure this has to be a remake of Red Dawn (1984) so I was quite surprised to see it's based on this book. The author has surely done his homework on Red Dawn (1984) as the story is so strikingly similar. Comparison aside and lets focus on the movie itself. It pretty much sucks. The story is so corny it's quite unbelievable someone even wasted money to make it into a movie. It fails to bring anything new to the table and just keeps recycling the old cliches. Sure the younger audience might get something out of it, but for me it felt almost like an insult what brainless crap they were pushing me. Guess I wasn't the target audience... The cast was fairly ok, certainly nothing special but at least they were trying. The look was like a ripoff from all the summer Hollywood movies done with a smaller budget, so nothing to see there either. All in all quite a waste of time and money and even though I had the feeling the book might work better, I think I won't be reading it either. Some credit for the effort of the cast.
