An imaginative imaginarium

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

Saw this in the theaters and loved the visuals on it so decided to give it another try on Blu-Ray. The strong point of this movie is of course the wild weird imaginative wold of Terry Gilliam and the looks of it. But also the cast is quite stellar. Everyone praises Heath Ledger's last performance, but it's not the best performance in this movie. The best is by far Tom Waits as the devil himself, he does an absolutely brilliant job. Ledger's death is covered quite nicely with changing the looks of the character every time he enters the "imaginarium". His stand-ins Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all do a good job as well. Though Colin Farrell has the juiciest bits of the story so he gets to really let it loose and does a great job at it. So the cast is great and the movie looks good, but there's still something missing. It's the story. This is a fairy tale for the grown ups, but yet the themes are a bit too childish for my liking. Certainly entertaining without any dull moments, but as the movie tries to be a bit deeper than just the beautiful skin of it, it doesn't really deliver to it's full potential. Well worth watching, but left me wanting for a bit better.
