Zeitgeist: Moving Forward (2011)
I have seen the first one also, didn't watch through the second one as I got annoyed by all the one sided points in it. I did watch this third part fully as I was in awe how brilliant the propaganda was in it. That's why I'm not going to review this movie, I'll just comment on the propaganda of the "movement" how I see it. As I've already ranted about this on other forums I'll copy-paste some of my comments after the first movie here too.
Well the basic idea is to point out what's wrong with the world and at many parts it's quite ok, they are real problems that should be resolved some way. But the very nasty way these movies are made, makes the viewer agree for everything for the first hour or so and then they come up with their "solution" and at start it's easy to agree to it. After all they point out so valid statements and these thing are really wrong in the world. But in the end it's nothing but a propaganda piece of a "religion" similar to ones we've seen many times in the past.
First of all the very narrow view on money it portrays. They conviniently "forgot" to mention where the value of money is based on. It's of course on the land and the resources it holds. That basically means money equals resources and therefore it kinda makes the whole venus project sound funny. Of course that's exaggeration, but so is the movie and therefore we can use it here too. Sure it's true that you can create money "out of nothing" and many countries do it, but as history has proven, inflation and depression evens out the gap quite fast. I'm not an economist, so don't know every detail of the monetary system, but just didn't like the one sided view on things. Things can be made look worse than they are if you leave parts out of it. And yes, things do look bad in the world at the moment, everyone can see that from the papers, but it's not some big conspiracy, it's bad economics for fucks sake. For example of how leaving one little thing out of the facts can change how you see things, I could tell you, and prove with facts and official documents, that a constant use of amphetamine is one of the fastest ways to loose weight. Therefore I could also tell you that we should solve the problem of obese children by feeding them amphetamine as it's a proven fact that it works. I just leave out all the other side effects it has. If you wouldn't know what amphetamine really is that would of course sound great to you. That's exactly what they are doing here, leave out the details that would ruin their claim.
And no, I don't agree that moneytarism would be the right way to go, but so isn't that Venus project either. I got actually a bit scared of that. It sounded like the basic principle of communism taken to a new level of totalitarianism just without the government. I mean come on, even if there's no governing power to tell you what to do, it doesn't mean that people wouldn't still want to do things their own way. Just face it, they are telling people what to think, what to believe, how to live and so on. No matter how good it all sounds, people would loose a great deal of their right to choose. And that's utter bullshit. I choose to believe in the Buddha, the Boogeyman and Mister Hankey the Christmas Poo. And most of all I choose to believe hard work always pays off and not necessarily with money. I mean if people are teached right from the birth everything in life by the means of science, given the same starting point and the same resources to develop further, like they said their goal would be. That would make everyone exactly the same in the end. And that's what scares me. I saw it as they want to turn people into ants with one goal in mind, research, invent, create more for a better tomorrow and then in the end, well, you die. A world full of people like me would be a horrible place to be. I want there to be religious nutcases, I want there to be snobbish highly educated people, I want there to be the dumb rednecks, I want people to be different! That's one of the few things what makes this life so great. And hell, just to be provocative, I even want there to be inequality, war and so on. Those things, as bad as they are, really make you appreciate life. So, they really limit your right to choose by removing a whole lot of options.
How would they deal with people who just don't fit into their system? Brainwash them into their norms? Export them to another country to live how they choose there? Turn them into bio fuel? I mean come on, even Hitler had a nice goal in mind at one point, but you all know how that ended up.
Sure it raises good points and the basic idea of a better future, flawed as it is, but still of course quite beautiful. But in the end, common sense, that weird thing we all have but are somewhat unsure what it really is and how it works, helps to make this world a better place. Much more so than any documentary/propaganda/movement/group/organization/corporation/etc.
As a general note to these kinds of "documentaries". In the past 10 years or so there has been a big rise of these kind of documentaries and it's a bit scary to be honest. I mean it's definitely good that people voice themselves out and tell the world what's bugging them and what's wrong with the system. But the thing is that people watch these as if they would be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth (pun intended for the justice system). These are all just one side of the story and every story has more than one sides to it. And one side of a story told as the truth, that my friends is propaganda. I hope people would watch it and filter it with that in mind. The ending of this third movie is just mind blowing in how manipulative the propaganda in these movies is. I mean even though I watch it as propaganda and know it's just bullshit and yet it managed to touch the right buttons and got me all excited. That's scary.
I'm not going to give this one a score as it's not really a fictional or documentary movie. It's propaganda and surely well made one, but that's not what this blog is here for.
