There's something under the skin of the ruins

The Ruins (2008)

Well this one starts like all the others of it's kind. A group of young pretty people boozing, having sex and fun, ready to go for an adventure. They head off to an ancient Mayan temple that's not in the tourist maps. Seen it all before and you just know what's coming. Well luckily I was a bit wrong, the youngsters do get their share as always, but the twist is pretty fresh and the movie woke me up nicely. The less you know of this is better, because it's spoiled quite easily and you don't want so see it just for the acting or directing as both are quite shaky. There's a few of those what the fuck moments, couple of scenes that are really disgusting in all of their brutality and even a bit of dark humor has found it's way in there. So all in all good stuff and it kind of reminded me of Cabin Fever at some parts, not as funny thou, but the themes were similar. The ending seemed a bit rushed and as always in these kind of movies the sequel spot was left wide open, which was a bit of a setback after the great second half. Was worth watching, but too bad the ending brought down the mood and the start could have been a bit more unique, but it still stands out from the average modern horror flicks of it's kind.
