Piscine Molitor Patel is a
curious character, first named after a swimming pool in France and
then shortened to a mathematical symbol. His parents own a zoo in
India, where Pi spends his first years growing up. But things take a
different turn as they have to move to Canada, so they pack
themselves and the animals into a boat and head towards new
adventures. However a storm sinks the ship and Pi ends up in a
lifeboat with an assortment of animals, the main one being a Bengal
tiger. And so the mystical tale of survival begins. Right from the
start I must say this movie looked absolutely stunning and even
though the damn 3D was a nuisance again, I didn't mind it that much.
Well apart from a few scenes where things come flying into you a bit
too much and that freaking pole scene which was just plain annoying.
But still most of the time I was just at awe of the beauty on the
screen. Suraj Sharma was quite good as the young Pi, but other than
that the cast was quite forgettable, then again it didn't matter much
as the young Pi is where the movie focuses anyway. Without the 3D I
probably wouldn't complain about the length of the movie, I'd be
happy to watch imagery this beautiful for more than 2 hours, but with
it I got a bit bored at times as the movie is not in a hurry to get
you to the end. At the start religion plays a big role in the movie
and when Pi says that he has a story that will make you believe in
God, that got me very curious about things to come. Especially since
I've heard quite a few remarks about this movie that it might just
change your life, your beliefs and so forth. Unfortunately though the
“deeper” meaning of this movie turns out to be as shallow as a
puddle of rainwater on the street, as all it really says is that you
choose what you want to believe in. Wow, am I the only one who finds
that already rather ridiculously obvious? Well even though I was
disappointed in the philosophical side of the movie, it was still quite
entertaining and visually stunning experience.
