James Stewart and the big white rabbit

Harvey (1950)

I would say this is the most feel-good movie ever made. Even though it's overflowing in kindness and warm hearted feeling it surprisingly manages not to get cheesy at any point. Usually things need the bad or some sort of opposing not so good feeling so that the good feeling is portrayed better, without it an overflowing goodness tend to feel a bit fake and senseless or worse yet meaningless. But in this one there are no opposing feelings, just the good and it works like magic. You just have to experience it to believe it. So the mood is absolutely brilliant. The movie is about a marvelous man called Elwood P. Dowd and his friend, an invisible giant rabbit, Harvey. Elwood is described as a mentally ill drunk who spends most of his time in a bar talking to people and introducing his friend to them. His sister doesn't like what Elwood's friend is doing for her social life, everyone is referring to her as the sister of that mad man. So she decides it's time to get Elwood to a mental hospital. That's about all I'm going to say about the plot, but believe me there's more and then some. Absolutely brilliant story and the way it's told makes it even more stunning. The cast is superb, Jimmy Stewart does a role of his lifetime and him being Jimmy Stewart with the plethora of brilliant roles he has done, that's saying a lot. The rest of the cast is not a bit worse, Josephine Hull won an Oscar for best actress in a supporting role and most definitely deserved it. Perfect mood, stellar cast and a magnificent story made into a brilliant movie. This is one of those movies that stand time pretty much forever and if it won't put you in a good mood then nothing will.
