Robbery runs in the family

The Town (2010)

Those of you who know me are probably wondering did hell just freeze over or why am I reviewing a movie starring Ben Affleck and directed by Ben Affleck? After all the hate I've given him, shouldn't I stay far away from his movies? Well, he is a horrible actor, but then again his debut direction Gone Baby Gone (2007) was actually quite an ok movie. Maybe because he himself wasn't starring it. I have to give him some credit on direction so I was curious and also frightened what can he do when he directs and stars in this one. I know this sounds harsh and knowing my stance on the guy quite unfair maybe, but I have to say right at the start this movie would have worked a lot better without Affleck. He is simply aweful. His face is portraying one feeling while his voice is portraying another, leaving us with this hollow shell which tells us nothing at all. And as this movie has Affleck in about 90% of the scenes, it's quite doomed. But past the horrible performance, there is a story underneath. It's not the most original and the whole scenario of a love between the criminal and the "victim" at start seemed quite bad, but it's handled with a nice touch. The way the story is told is this movie's greatest part, it takes a realistic look into the life of a criminal and takes us a bit deeper than usual. The rest of the cast is great and support the movie nicely when Affleck's performance fails. The direction is solid and the movie looks nicely gritty. So Affleck is quite good as a director as he surely does have something in there. Had Affleck cast someone else instead of Affleck, this movie would have been quite great, now it's barely worth the watch.
