Valhalla Rising (2009)
There's not many Viking movies, especially good ones. It's a shame as there should be plenty of stories worth of filming and I personally find the whole Viking era quite interesting. So I was kinda excited to finally get to see what Pusher's director Nicolas Refn can get out of it. The beginning of the movie is an ultra violent introduction to a human killing machine which promises a lot to come from the rest of the movie. Well unfortunately the rest of the movie is nothing what after the beginning I was hoping for. The group of Vikings sets on a journey to find new land and the director starts a trip into the depths of their minds. The movie is quite surreal and not the easiest to follow, but you don't need to be a genius to get the point. Unfortunately it has way too little content for the duration of it, so it gets very boring at parts. And towards the end when you already understand what's happening you just wait for it to end while it's still dragging along. I really wanted to like this movie, but unfortunately it's not a good movie, strong start falls apart quite fast and the movie almost stands still before it drags to the predictable ending. And it didn't help that I had just seen Aguirre a few days before as they are quite similar in many ways.
