Bergman on horror

The Virgin Spring (1960)

My personal favourite from Ingmar Bergman. Not the usual Bergman, being even horror at parts, but still there's lots of the familiar elements present. It's the movie which spawned one of the cruelest remakes ever, The Last House on the Left. But where The Last House on the Left focused on the torture and gore, this original handles the subject far superior. It's still brutal and cruel, but it's focusing more on the pain of the parents not only feasting on the pain of the girl. It's a movie about revenge, guilt, sin and purification. Religious themes are used brilliantly to justify and question the actions and the whole religion itself. It's beautifully shot, the direction is flawless and the cast is brilliant. A true masterpiece, one of my all time favourites and one of those movies everyone should see.
