Shine a light towards the exit

Vanishing on 7th Street (2010)

Got somewhat interested after seeing the trailer, though Hayden Christensen's name turned me off quite a bit. But then again there were some other names in it which didn't sound bad at all, like the director Brad Anderson who has done some quite good little thrillers before. The movie is about this incident where one night there is a massive power outage in Detroit. Those very few people who happened to be next to a battery powered light or fire or something similar find out that everyone else has vanished. Soon a group of survivors gather to a bar with a power generator to wonder what's going on. And that's about all I can say about the movie, not because I don't want to spoil it, but because the movie gives no answers. The plot is full of holes that make it look quite idiotic and the story really has no conclusion. Now I don't mind mysteries that don't get solved and especially I love mysteries that you can solve yourself. But if you take the unsolved way you need to have good characters and the story needs to remain interesting throughout the movie. Otherwise what's the point of making the movie in the first place? Well this movie manages to fail on both of those. The story is very interesting at start, but later on falls to the idiotic holes it has and becomes ridiculous. Add to that the fact that the characters are way too shallow to raise any kind of emotions and you are left with meaningless nonsense. Have to give some credit to the starting point, it was nice, but a movie really needs more than just a start without any interesting characters.
