The Kids Are All Right (2010)
I was wondering which of the Oscar nominees was the so called stock drama, well this is kind of it. Though as this isn't really a conventional movie it's not the full definition of stock drama, but still the dramatic storyline is very straight forward. It's a basic family drama where a new person steps into the lives of the family members and things end up getting bad. Though this time the family consists of two mothers and two children and the person coming to their lives is the sperm donor and the biological father of their children. At first things go great but then one of the mothers falls in love with the man and off we go. The story is simple and very common from other movies with just that one twist. There are a few laughs but the focus is on the dramatic content. The cast is quite good and they do a good job at their parts, which is great as otherwise this movie would have been quite a bore to follow. Though Mark Ruffalo's overly nasal hissing voice got at parts a bit unintentionally funny. Everything else works quite good and in the end you're left with a movie that tries to say a lot but ends up being quite like a stock drama. Don't really know why this movie got the Oscar nomination, maybe the academy wants to please the sexual minorities or something as I could easily pick ten better movies from last year. Anyway, it was worth the watch, even though it did leave me wishing something more.
