The wacky world war II

1941 (1979)

Spielberg doing a goofball comedy is something worth seeing all by itself. Sure it is kind of a flop, but there's still something in there. Loved how the casting is done in this one. You have your comedy legends like Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi and John Candy playing the U.S. army, while Kurosawa's main man Toshiro Mifune and the horror icon Christopher Lee are on the opposing side. Stellar cast throughout and you can even see young Mickey Rourke in there. So the cast is not the problem, the problem is the nonsense story or the lack of it. There's tons of things going on all the time and the movie jumps around these smaller story bits trying to get everything in the mix. This creates quite a mess. Now it's not that bad as it's a goofball comedy after all and yes it's actually funny at parts, but yet would have hoped for a bit of more control on it. The comedy is quite slapstick most of the time and ranging from very poor to very good. The funny thing is how Spielberg even makes fun of his own movies in it. The beginning swimming bit with it's Jaws (1975) references was quite hilarious. All in all this was an entertaining no brainer and actually worked better this time as it did last time I saw it. So maybe there's a bit of classic somewhere in this nonsense also.
