A short review about two short films

A Short Film About Killing (1988)

This could have been a brilliant movie but unfortunately it falls quite hard simply for the fact that you can't feel any sympathy for the killer. He's a psychopatic killer and that kinda waters down the points this movie raises about if death penalty is justified or not. Sure in the end there are a few scenes where the killer is trying to score some sympathy points, but it's a bit too late at that point as the viewer has already had so much time to categorize him as a person they want to never face. Now the only sympathy you have is for the lawyer whose idealistic view of the world gets a rather harsh wake up call. Sure it works with just that, but as the movie raises some very good points about death sentence it would have worked so much better had the killer been somewhat more likable. It's kind of sad that this movie has all the ingredients of a masterpiece in it but it lacks one simple detail which brings it down to a just above average drama.

A Short Film About Love (1988)

Now this movie works brilliantly and I consider this to be one of Kieslowski's best films. It's not your usual love story and that's one of the reasons which makes it so brilliant. Sure some of the dialog is a bit corny, but it doesn't matter at all as silence tells more in this movie than words. Nothing much I can say about this except that it's a brilliant movie and definitely worth seeing.
