What dreams may come...

An Andalusian Dog (1929)

A short movie based on two separate dreams with no intention what so ever to make any sense. Only purpose of it is to shock the audience awake from their boring presumptions. Sounds promising eh? Well it is and it isn't. People have written books about their interpretations about this movie and yet it never was the director's, Luis Bunuel, intention to have any sense in it. So I'm not going to give any of mine, even though as all surrealistic art I did interpret it my own way. It's just a 16 minute series of images and actions all there to shock and confuse the audience, served with a swinging tango music. The importance of this movie can not be denied, it surely opened new doors for the future film makers creating a whole new way of story telling in movies. I'm not a fan of surrealistic story telling, I tend to think if you have something to say, say it and don't go creating visions that the audience may or may not understand as you intended. But luckily that's not all this movie did, it also shook the conservative nature of movies with at that time quite extreme violence, very disturbing imagery and even nudity. So it's well considered to be an important movie and I agree with that. Now, is it a good movie? Hell no, it's utter nonsense. But nevertheless it is among the most important movies ever made. How do I rate something that is quite crap but yet also so important? I don't.
